Chamal Jayaratna: A Legacy of Jewelry Design Sparked in Sri Lanka, Celebrated Worldwide.

From the vibrant heart of Colombo to the grand ateliers of Paris and the refined showcases of Australia,
Chamal Jayaratna has become a name synonymous with innovation, elegance, and timeless design. With more than two decades in the jewelry world and a portfolio that speaks across cultures and generations, Chamal has carved a niche as one of the most respected jewelry designers on the global stage. We sat down with the Chief Brand Designer of leading companies Australia and Luxury platforms in Paris to discuss his creative journey, inspirations, and the legacy he continues to build—one jewel at a time.

Q: Chamal, your journey began in Colombo, Sri Lanka. How did your upbringing influence your path into
the world of jewelry design?
Chamal: Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the jewelry trade, I was constantly surrounded by the sparkle of gemstones and the rhythm of craftsmanship. My earliest memories are of watching artisans bring metal and stone to life. That environment shaped my appreciation for detail and instilled a deep respect for the artistry involved. It was never just about business—it was about telling stories through form and brilliance.

Q: You’ve worked across continents and won prestigious awards, including the Presidential Award in Sri
Lanka. What drives your creative vision after all these years?
Chamal: Passion and curiosity. I’m inspired by everything—nature, architecture, human emotion. I always try to blend timeless techniques with fresh perspectives. Every piece I design is a dialogue between tradition and innovation. Winning awards is a great honor, but for me, the real reward is when someone connects with a piece I’ve created—when it becomes part of their story.

Q: Many people don’t know the intense process behind creating fine jewelry. Could you share a bit about
your design approach—from concept to final piece?
Chamal: Certainly. It starts with a story, a concept—sometimes from the client, sometimes from within. Then I move to sketches, choosing stones, and working on proportions. I often create detailed prototype models to test how the piece will come together structurally and aesthetically. It’s a fusion of engineering and poetry. Every curve, cut, and setting has purpose.

Q: Your work has reached celebrity circles . How does designing for high-profile clients differ from other
projects?
Chamal: The fundamentals remain the same: craftsmanship, emotion, storytelling. But with high-profile clients, there’s often a heightened sense of symbolism. You’re not just creating jewelry—you’re capturing moments, milestones, personal legends. That level of intimacy requires deep collaboration, discretion, and above all, trust.

Q: One of your standout achievements was contributing to ‘The Crown Coin’ gold diamond coin with the
East India Company London. Tell us about that experience.
Chamal: It was truly a career-defining moment. Being part of a project commemorating Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign was humbling. The coin wasn’t just a collectible—it was history etched in gold and diamonds. The design had to honor her legacy while upholding the highest standards of elegance and craftsmanship. I’ll never forget that responsibility and pride.

Q: You currently hold key roles in Australia and Paris. How do you balance such diverse markets and
creative directions?
Chamal: It’s a dance, but one I love. Each brand has its own identity and audience. In Australia, there’s a love for simplicity and brilliance, while in Paris, there’s a flair for sophistication and bold expression. My role is to ensure that every collection reflects the brand’s DNA while bringing in new energy. It keeps me on my toes—and constantly evolving.

Q: Looking ahead, what’s next for Chamal Jayaratna? Any dreams you’re yet to chase?
Chamal: Plenty! I’m working on integrating more sustainable practices into my designs and exploring collaborations that combine art, fashion, and technology. I also want to mentor emerging designers in Sri Lanka and abroad—pass on the knowledge and spirit that brought me here. For me, the future is about legacy—not just in design, but in the impact I can leave behind.
